I decided it would be interesting to take a look at some of the prototypical Maxim articles that emphasize heteronormativity, and take a completely opposite stand point in the rewrite. I will discuss how the ethos, pathos, and kairos of the various articles align to make the reader take a certain view point or stance on a subject. I will also compare the articles to some of the readings, such as Yep and discuss some viewpoints and correlations from Jane Killbournes Killing Us Softly.
For my rewrite, I will take a look at what the various articles said and take an opposite standpoint.

ReplyDeleteI think this is a fine idea for your research essay. What I would suggest that you do is look at Maxim, and look at the types of articles it tends to feature. This way, you can possibly gear your research and your revision of Maxim to more specific genres that appear in the magazine. This is a good start; as you proceed, you will need to refine your search and think about some of the other issues brought up in the proposal prompt, such as focus and audience. ~Megan

ReplyDeleteI think this could turn into a really good paper. I would, however, maybe think about switching the roles of the women and the men in the pictures and articles. What would it look like if Maxim switched their theme around and had women being the active gazers and the men being the passive, gazed-upon ones? I feel like Maxim is such a “Man” magazine, so I think you could almost make a point to rewrite the entire magazine. Like pick one or two articles to rewrite and then also pick a picture of a woman and make the picture be of a man instead. I think if you did something like this, you would have more than enough information to write about. If you don’t like the idea of rewriting a couple of articles, I would definitely consider the picture idea. You could use the Mulvey piece as well as the Bordo piece about the male body. I think the revision would be really good if you made the male do poses like females typically do. You could make the magazine a magazine that is still hyper-sexualized but directed toward females. I feel like most magazines we see that are directed toward women still have the ultimate motive to please the man. Try to make this magazine specifically for female viewing pleasure. It would be a totally different take on the norm.
I really like this idea. I think you will be able to find a lot of information on it because maxim is a very popular magazine and is discussed a lot because of its content.it goes well with everything we have talked about in class, but id like to know more information about how you are going to rewrite it. you were kind of vague in your proposal. I look forward to seeing more with your essay.
